Networks by country
Can I still use an old phone in the Netherlands?
On the right network, yes: KPN keeps 2G until December 2027. Odido has no 2G left, but its 3G still works for phones that have 3G.
2G in the Netherlands Partly
Partly. Odido has already switched 2G off. KPN plans 1 December 2027. VodafoneZiggo: not before the end of 2026.
3G in the Netherlands Partly
Vodafone closed 3G in 2020 and KPN in 2022. Odido is keeping 3G beyond 1 August 2026; it hasn’t set a date and promises six months’ notice.
What this means for a classic phone
For a 2G-only phone, use a SIM on KPN (2G until December 2027) or VodafoneZiggo while its 2G lasts. Odido has no 2G but still has 3G, so a phone with 3G can use it.
Before you buy a SIM
- Ask the operator (or the network behind your brand) whether it still runs 2G, and until when.
- A cheap pay-as-you-go or data SIM is usually enough: KeyAgain needs a little mobile data, not a big plan.
- You may have to type the operator’s data settings (APN) into the phone by hand.
- If the phone has Wi-Fi, it can get online at home whatever happens to the mobile networks.
