Phones that can’t run KeyAgain, and why

Updated · KeyAgain

KeyAgain runs on most phones with Java, but not on every classic phone. Here is who’s out, honestly, so you don’t waste an afternoon.

Phones that can’t install apps

The original Nokia 3310 (2000) and phones of its generation can’t install apps of any kind. Nokia’s later Series 30 and Series 30+ basic phones, including the 2017 Nokia 3310 and many Nokia 100-series phones, don’t install Java apps either, as far as we know. If you’ve added a Java game to one yourself, tell us.

KaiOS phones

Phones like the Nokia 8110 4G, 2720 Flip and 800 Tough run KaiOS, which uses web apps rather than Java ME. KeyAgain’s app can’t run there.

BlackBerry 10

The Z10, Q10, Passport and Classic run BlackBerry 10, which doesn’t run Java ME apps. Older Java-based BlackBerry OS phones (up to 7.1), such as the Curve and Bold, can.

Some operator-locked phones

In the 2000s some operators, especially in the US, sold phones that only run apps signed by the operator, or used a different app system (BREW) instead of Java. Those may install KeyAgain but not let it go online, or not install it at all.

Phones with no network left

A phone can run Java perfectly and still be stuck if the networks it needs are gone. A 2G-only phone in the US or Switzerland, for instance, has no mobile network; only models with Wi-Fi can get online there. Check your country.

Smartphones

Android phones and iPhones don’t run Java ME apps, and don’t need to: they can run the official messaging apps.

What to choose instead

If you want the classic-phone feel: a Nokia Series 40 bar phone (like the 2330 classic, 5310 or 6300), a Symbian E-series with QWERTY and Wi-Fi (E71, E63, E72), a Motorola RAZR, or a BlackBerry Curve. See every phone.

Questions

Can the Nokia 3310 run WhatsApp?

No. The original 3310 can’t install apps, and the 2017 model runs Series 30+, which as far as we know doesn’t install Java apps. A Series 40 Nokia of similar size, such as the 2330 classic, can run KeyAgain.

Can KaiOS phones run KeyAgain?

No. KaiOS uses web apps, not Java ME, so KeyAgain’s app can’t run there.
